Frequently Asked Questions
Psychotherapy, or "talk therapy," is a general term for treating mental, emotional, and behavioral concerns by talking with a trained mental health professional. It aims to help you relieve distress, change unhelpful behaviors, and promote constructive ways of coping. The primary goal is to help you gain insight into your challenges, develop healthy coping strategies, improve your relationships, and ultimately enhance your overall quality of life and well-being.
Psychiatrist (MD): A medical doctor who can diagnose and prescribe medication. Their services are often covered by provincial health plans (like OHIP). Psychologist (PhD/PsyD): Specialized in psychological assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Cannot prescribe medication. Registered Psychotherapist (RP) / Registered Social Worker (RSW): Provide talk therapy/counselling. Cannot diagnose or prescribe medication. Often the most affordable private options and frequently covered by extended health plans.
A 50-minute session costs $185 and payment is made through an e-transfer on the same day as the session. You may submit your receipt for payment to your insurance provider for reimbursement if they cover a Registered Psychotherapist.
The first session typically focuses on reviewing informed consent as well as asking you about your main reasons for seeking psychotherapy. You are welcome to talk about anything. Your therapist is there to listen without judgment. You may start with what is bothering you most, your feelings in the moment, or recent events.
Sessions are 50 minutes long.
You are welcome to have sessions at whatever frequency works best for your needs for support, your schedule, and your budget. Most clients start the therapy process with sessions scheduled once per week or once every two weeks. Once you start to find progress with your therapy goals, you may wish to extend the time in between sessions. Changing session frequency is at your discretion, and your therapist is happy to be flexible with your needs.
